GitHub offers private repositories to free users

According to The Next Web, users with free GitHub accounts will be able to create an unlimited number of private repositories, though these will be limited to three collaborators a piece.

GitHub has made its first major update since Microsoft officially acquired the ubiqituous code-sharing service for $7.5 billion: It's giving away unlimited free hosting for private coding projects.

Asked whether Microsoft's deep pockets led to GitHub's revenue refusal, Kathy Simpson, senior director of product at GitHub, told The Register, "We are really excited about GitHub Free and being able to bring unlimited private repositories to the community".

Microsoft is simplifying GitHub's business options as well.

Finally, if you're anxious that using a free service means you're the product, you can always install GitLab for free on your own server.

"Many developers want to use private repos to apply for a job, work on a side project, or try something out in private before releasing it publicly". Over 31 million developers have used GitHub to create 100 million repositories, each of them a discrete project. Now, making private repositories is free for everybody, and users can loop in up to three collaborators on these projects.

Nat Friedman, CEO of GitHub, writes on Twitter that since its acquisition, GitHub has shipped over 125 improvements.

It's also worth noting that other services like Atlassian's BitBucket already offer free private repositories, so Microsoft will be catching up with the competition. The new Enterprise Cloud plan will let organizations and businesses access cloud and self-hosted GitHub configurations for a single per-user price.
