Intel announces new 9th Gen desktop CPUs at CES 2019

Intel's new 9th Gen desktop CPUs may have ditched integrated GPUs to take on AMD

The processor also supports native Thunderbolt 3 over USB Type-C, marking the first Intel chip with native TB3 support. In its presentation Intel briefly discussed the likes of 10nm Ice Lake processors, hybrid 10nm Lakefield CPUs, and Project Athena laptops, as well as other non-PC-centric specific stuff like automotive, IoT, sports, AI, networking and 5G, etc.

Other aspects of Ice Lake it is worth highlighting are its Intel DL Boost instruction sets to accelerate AI workloads, and the integrated Intel Gen11 graphics to improve graphics performance ( 1TFLOP) and support Adaptive Sync (FreeSync). Lakefield's entire focus is on enabling computing in TDPs and power envelopes where conventional Intel CPUs might not fit. Project Athena is the Battlestar Galactica-inspired name Intel has given its new program aimed at creating a new class of advanced laptop which will use the efficient, miniscule Lakefield motherboards to power its devices. Ice Lake device battery life will be stellar, according to Intel, and prospective buyers will also benefit from super-thin, ultra-mobile designs with excellent responsiveness. Now unveiled as Ice Lake, Intel is promising that 10nm chips should arrive before the end of 2019, although the continued concerns over yield remain unaddressed.

Intel now plans to launch Ice Lake for consumer and server products, as well as Lakefield and Snow Ridge (both discussed below).

In October, Intel launched the first set of the 9th Gen Core desktop processors, including the Intel Core i9-9900K processor.

With many mid-range and higher-end PCs still coming equipped with a dedicated graphics card, Intel's integrated chips often go to waste, so offering a range of cheaper, GPU-less processors may help Intel win back some of the value-oriented market segment that it's recently been losing to AMD. From upcoming 10nm Xeon parts based on Ice Lake to its plans for new networking SoCs and a Nervana launch, the company has a busy schedule for itself. Facebook is also one of Intel's development partners on the NNP-I.

Without a hands-on with the new line of chips, it's hard to tell how valuable the jump to 10nm will be for Intel, but this does provide much-needed proof of concept for the company.

The Ice Lake architecture will also be used for future Intel Xeon Scalable processors which will ship in 2020.

Intel has announced a 48-core CPU for data centers, but the most impressive feature brings enhanced performance to database applications. The company is moving Intel architecture-based products into network products with the goal of increasing edge compute resources and reducing workload latency. Cascade Lake is expected to be broadly available in the first half of this year.
