Acer Predator Triton 500 hands-on: RTX without the size compromise

Acer Predator Triton 500 hands-on: RTX without the size compromise

After Samsung and Asus' announcements, Acer has unveiled a curious $4,000 convertible laptop named the Predator Triton 900. The middle Triton 500 supports G-Sync on the display and offers an RTX 2080 with Max-Q design that is also overclockable.

Special attention has been given to the Predator Triton 900 due to its one-of-a-kind flipping screen. I'm not sure ergonomics is top of mind for most gamers who are willing to shell out $4,000 for a laptop, but it can't hurt either.

Other than the graphics, the spec sheet goes by the form book, but everything is available to the max, with up to six-core Intel Core i7 processors, 32GB of DDR4 memory, fast SSDs and 300 nit 15.6-inch IPS LCD on the Triton 500 that's capable of 144hz refresh rates and 3ms response time.

In person, the Triton 500 looks like a sleek machine, thanks in part to the slim bezels that surround its 15.6-inch 1080p display.

This might sound like odd design for a gaming machine, but Acer wants users - non-gaming users - to take advatange of the processing power and touchscreen.

It also includes an Xbox controller wireless receiver, so you can use your existing Xbox controllers to play PC games without needing to dig up the USB cable. Waves audio is also included, including Waves Nx with head tracking for a 3D audio experience. All three Triton 500 models use the Core i7 8750H CPU, come in at just 0.70 in thick (17.9 mm), and will weigh 4.6 lbs (2.1 Kg). Additionally, it comes with support for VR-ready games.

Last, but not the least, both the Predator Nitron 900 and the Triton 500 come with support for the PredatorSense app to control the laptops via smartphones. Acer intends to release a smartphone app that it is calling PredatorSense later this year, which will make it possible for you to adjust the lights, audio, and fans on the system. It will also enable users to view and set customised macro key sets for physical hotkeys.

Set to arrive in North America in March, the Predator Triton 900 comes with a hefty price tag of $3,999. It will be available in North America in February with prices starting at US$1,799, in EMEA in February with prices starting at €1,999, and in China in January with prices starting at ¥16,999.
