Google Assistant’s new features make it more useful for travelers

A woman demonstrates the Artemis smart mirror at the CareOS booth during CES in Las Vegas

Today, Google announced that the Assistant is coming to the Sonos One wireless speaker and Sonos Beam soundbar, which launched with Amazon Alexa.

Google have a big presence at CES once again this year and their presence is dominated by Google Assistant.

Google regularly updates its Assistant in an effort to make it smarter and more helpful. The Google Assistant on your smart speaker handles the "higher-order computing" and then uses Assistant Connect to deliver that information to the linked device.

A live demonstration showed just how the system works; simply say the command to initiate - for example, "Hey Google, be my French interpreter" - and Google Assistant will jump into Interpreter Mode. Soon, Google Assistant will allow you to check in to your flight, save and retrieve your boarding pass.

For hotel booking, you can instruct Assistant to "book the Cambria Hotel in NY on January 12th,".

As cool as smart displays - like Google's Home Hub - are, I've never really wanted one.

Google has been demoing the feature at the American show and is branding the function as a way to have conversation with people from other nationalities, even if you are not fluent in their spoken language. As well as being a dual-USB vehicle charger to keep your devices topped up on the road, the $50 Bolt adds Google Assistant directly to your auto.

As usual, though, you'll notice some differences in the Google Maps/Assistant experience depending on what kind of device you're using.

You can check out all the new updates to Google Assistant here. Voice notifications also keep you up to speed on incoming messages and reminders while you drive. It has arrived on Google Maps, and it is also going to be on your bedside table, thanks to the latest smart display that Lenovo made.

With most of these changes rolling out in the next few weeks the increasing functionality of Google Assistant will be hard to keep track of but well worth trying.
