Mobile teases "9G" because it's as true as AT&T's "5G E"

A 9G sticker on a smartphone

They're pushing an update to Samsung phones that passes off their LTE-A with carrier aggregation, LAA, 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM as 5G-E (fake 5G), and now T-Mobile and Verizon are calling them out on it. The phones are not actually connected to a new 5G network-5G E stands for 5G Evolution, a rebranding of the faster portions of LTE.

So, TMo customers, get ready for "9G" - it's even easier to apply because it doesn't require a software update. There will of course be various different leaks and promotions over the next couple of weeks leading up to MWC, but the first devices able to make use of the 5G euphoria will not be available until Spring at the very earliest.

Both Verizon and T-Mobile have vowed to be more truthful with consumers to ensure there's no confusion over the "real" 5G services they'll offer.

"The potential for 5G is awesome, but the potential to over-hype and under-deliver on the 5G promise is a temptation that the wireless industry must resist", Verizon said.

AT&T's move in this regard is exceptionally misleading, and Verizon wants to let everyone know that they're only going to use a 5G designation when "new device hardware is connecting to the network using new radio technology to deliver new capabilities".

"We won't take an old phone and just change the software to turn the 4 in the status bar into a 5", Kyle Malady, Verizon's chief technology officer, wrote in a post Monday.

Verizon goes on to talk about the investments that it is making to roll 5G technology out nationwide.

5G is the next generation of wireless service, and it's expected to bring a big boost in speed and network responsiveness, which opens the door to a better mobile experience, as well new areas of tech like streaming VR or telemedicine. The result was a commercial 5G offering a full two years ahead of original estimates. He added that "When we say '5G, ' we mean 5G". 5G is the current buzzword in the industry and a lot of customers are eagerly waiting for its rollout, but this is surely not a way to do it.
