Video shows teacher dragging autistic 9-year-old

A teacher at Wurtland Elementary School is seen dragging a 9-year-old autistic student down the hallway in Greenup County Kentucky

A Kentucky teacher was charged with assault on January 8, after a video showing her dragging a 9-year-old boy through a school's corridors was posted to social media.

Trina Abrams, a former resource teacher at Wurtland Elementary School in Eastern Kentucky, can be seen in surveillance footage dragging the child out of a classroom and through multiple hallways after he became frustrated and began to have a meltdown. Abrams is set to appear in court Wednesday.

Nelson told WSAZ her son was diagnosed with Autism, ADHA, PTSD, anxiety, and depression and that he has an Individualized Education Program in place to make sure "all his needs are met while at school".

Nelson said her son sustained injuries to his wrist during the dragging incident and has to go through "more intense occupational therapy to regain his skills that took so long to grasp".

Also in her post Nelson said that all schools should be required to have cameras to protect students and teachers.

The incident was also reported to the Kentucky Education Standards Board as per protocol, according to the district.

Greenup County Schools Superintendent Sherry Horsley said that after the incident, school officials followed "established safety protocol", explaining in a statement to The Post that the "parent was contacted immediately and the student was assessed by the school nurse and referred for outside medical evaluation".

The family says the woman in the video was in charge of the special needs program at the school.

Nelson concluded, "Also all schools should have more training for teachers to handle children with disabilities and to learn proper protocol to retrain and redirect if needed".

Calep Nelson's message to parents? "My son deserves justice", she wrote.

Angel Nelson told CNN Monday that her son was removed from a classroom after he had an outburst.

"The Greenup County School District prioritizes the safety of our students".

Last year, an OH teacher was sacked after she was photographed dragging a student by the arm down a school hallway.

"All GCSD staff are trained to prevent incidents of restraint", the statement added.

Her son had just started at the school a month prior, and she and her husband transferred him out within two weeks of the incident, she said.

"The fact that my son is not able to fully verbalize what he went through means that we must fight that much harder for all kids, but especially the kids who can not speak for themselves", the upset mother wrote on Facebook. Each school has a specially trained team to address immediate issues, and the school has teachers specially trained to address autism-related behaviors.

Abrams did not return ABC News' request for comment. "We should never have to worry about anything like this happening".

When you send your child to school you want them to be safe.

The incident occurred in October past year at Wurtland Elementary school in Greenup County. "The teacher was removed from the school". But Heskins said that school staff don't always adhere to the state regulation. He refused and she pulled the child into a standing position. "On the other hand, we have to have processes in place that ensure accountability on the part of employees", Brooks said.
