Chocolates, caramels sold nationwide may be contaminated with Hepatitis A

Treats sold by a candy company are being recalled because of a possible Hepatitis A contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted customers to a possible hepatitis A contamination of Bauer's Candies Modjeskas.

The FDA advised that customers who bought the sweets should throw them away.

The FDA asks anyone who ate the candy in question to consult with their doctors.

The firm said the employee tested positive for the virus had worked at the facility from November 16 to November 23, said Anna Bauer, president of Bauer's sweets, in a statement. We are now working with Bauer's sweets, located in Kentucky, on a voluntary recall of affected products. "These agencies have cleared us to continue operation". People that bought the candy after November 14 should throw the product away.

But today, the firm announced a voluntary recall after a worker tested positive for hepatitis A, a highly contagious infection.

The FDA added that the products could be purchased via QVC and BauersCandy.com.

Bauer's Candies' modjeskas - marshmallow dipped in chocolate or caramel - are a delicacy of Kentucky, sold across the US.

The disease targets the liver and the effects can range from mild to severe.

It can happen when an infected person prepares food without washing their hands, even if the person doesn't show signs of illness.

Bauer's sweets did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional comment.

In their statement, the FDA noted that the risk of contamination from the sweets was "low", adding that those infected with the virus may not have symptoms until 15 to 50 days after exposure.

Symptoms - which include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dark urine - can take anywhere from two to seven weeks after exposure to appear. Young children may not show symptoms of HAV infection.

The Mayo Clinic says hepatitis A can be spread through a variety of ways. Hepatitis A can cause liver failure and even death, typically in those who are 50 years of age or older, though that's rare.
