Comatose woman hospitalized after birth with baby

Hacienda HealthCare operates the long-term care facility for the developmentally disabled where the Native American woman, who has been in a vegetative state for 14 years after a near-drowning, gave birth on December 29 to a baby boy, according to KPHO.

Authorities are asking the public to help identify a suspect in a sexual assault case regarding an "incapacitated" woman who gave birth to a baby at Hacienda HealthCare last month.

Police have now issued a search warrant for DNA swabs from male workers in the healthcare facility where the woman became pregnant.

This story has been updated to clarify the woman's medical condition.

The relatives, who say they are not ready to come forward, asked for it to be conveyed publicly that the child has been "born into a loving family and will be well cared for".

The statement said the company welcomed the move to investigate what it called "this deeply disturbing but unprecedented situation".

Thompson declined to say if police were looking at visitors to the health care center in addition to employees, and he would not specify whose DNA has been obtained or is being sought.

Detectives also served a search warrant Tuesday to gather records relevant to the ongoing investigation, he said.

Today, the San Carlos Apache Tribe (the "Tribe") learned of the tragic circumstances surrounding [redacted], an enrolled member of the Tribe.

"The family obviously is outraged, traumatized and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda Healthcare", John Micheaels, an attorney representing the family, told HuffPost in a statement Wednesday.

He confirmed the baby was in distress following the birth, but staff members of the facility were there when the baby was born and it was a natural birth.

Tribe chairman Terry Rambler spoke on behalf of the tribe in saying he was "deeply shocked and horrified".

AZ Family reported a source at Hacienda HeathCare said "none of the staff were aware she was pregnant until she way pretty much giving birth".

'When you have a loved one committed to palliative care, when they are most vulnerable and dependent upon others, you trust their caretakers. A majority of its patients are infants, children, teens and young adults. It also appears that caretakers were completely unaware of her pregnancy until she began to give birth.

"In a statement, board member Gary Orman said: "[We] will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation". Hacienda HealthCare CEO Bill Timmons resigned Monday amid the investigation.

Gov. Doug Ducey said he was "very troubled" by the allegations. In the wake of the reports, the Arizona Department of Health Services said new safety measures have been implemented.

The case is "disturbing, to put it mildly", said Jon Meyers, executive director of The Arc of Arizona, an advocacy group for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
