IBM creates Q System One to sell quantum capacity

IBM's Q System One is the world's first commercial quantum computer

"IBM also led the industry in the number of AI, cloud computing, security and quantum computing-related patent grants, with more than 4,000 patents", it said. "We'll see quantum computing's first impact in the areas of chemistry and science".

Quantum computers promise to outperform regular machines at certain tasks by exploiting the unusual properties of quantum physics, and the IBM Q utilizes theories of physics to create computing techniques that are far more powerful than current devices. The company also earned patents for blockchain technology as well as for quantum computing uses.

At this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, IBM took the wraps off the Q System One, which it claims is the world's first integrated universal quantum computing system for commercial applications.

The IBM Q System One uses a motor-driven rotation around its two displaced axes to ease its maintenance and upgrade process.

IBM provided few actual details of the internals or power of the IBM Q System One. Usually, quantum computers are carefully preserved in research labs, where various elements such as reinforced chambers, tanks of liquid helium, cryogenic equipment and hundreds of yards of cabling, the Financial Times reported.

IBM isn't aiming to bring the Q System One to the masses. "Protection from this interference is one of many reasons why quantum computers and their components require careful engineering and isolation", IBM said in a statement.

Other providers, such as D-Wave International, are offering specialized quantum computers that harness quantum annealing for optimization problems, from traffic optimization in China to election modeling. "This new system is critical in expanding quantum computing beyond the walls of the research lab as we work to develop practical quantum applications for business and science".

ExxonMobil will become the first energy company to join the IBM Q Network. However, quantum computers are much more powerful. IBM, along with other big tech firms such as Google, Microsoft and Intel, is working toward a universal, scalable quantum computer, which will be capable of solving a lot of problems without needing specialization - moving technologists past the limits of current classical and supercomputers. Called as "IBM Q System One", the computer has been created to employ quantum computing principles (albeit in their initial phases) and could be used by businesses and individuals for their own uses.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory will use quantum computers along with high-performance supercomputers to benchmark new methods for studying strongly correlated dynamics in quantum materials, chemistry, and nuclear physics.
