'If Shutdown Continues, I Won't Go' - Trump May Skip Davos

US President Donald Trump delivers a speech during the World Economic Forum annual meeting

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday canceled his planned trip later this month to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, amid a shutdown of the federal government, signaling he was prepared for the political showdown to stretch into late January. He said he will not attending because Democrats will not budge on border security, thus continuing the government shutdown.

Currently, the president is visiting the border to drum up support for his demand for funds to build a wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico.

Talking with reporters early Thursday, Trump was still deciding if he was going to attend.

'I meant to go and speak in front of the world financial community in Davos. That's still on, but if the shutdown continues. It's been very successful when I went.

Trump walked out of a meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) on Wednesday, calling it a "waste of time" because the Democrats were not willing to negotiate.

The partial USA government shutdown is in its 20th day, with no sign of an agreement.

China and the United States have taken a 90-day pause in implementing tariffs to hammer out a trade deal.

The Trump administration is engaged in trade talks with the European Union and China, among others.
