May suffers parliament defeat as Brexit debate resumes

It Seems Britons Don't Want to Leave Europe After All - Poll Shows

British Prime Minister Theresa May is rapidly losing control over her Brexit strategy after the government suffered a pair of humiliating defeats in the House of Commons this week that have opened the door to a range of possibilities, including another referendum on Brexit.

On Wednesday, MPs approved a motion that will force her to return to Parliament with a "Plan B" within three sitting days of Parliament, or Monday.

Numerous Labour MPs also came to his defence, with Labour MP Chuka Umunna tweeting: "In the Commons chamber now watching the spectacle of a bunch of Tory MPs, who argued for Brexit to reassert Parliamentary sovereignty, now objecting to the Speaker selecting a motion to be voted on that would empower the House of Commons".

"That is what I have tried to do and what I will go on doing".

The Commons Speaker faced a backlash from Conservative MPs after selecting a proposal from Tory former minister Dominic Grieve, which attempts to speed up the process for the Government to reveal what it will do next if Theresa May's deal is rejected.

Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said: "The government's decision to delay the meaningful vote has run down the clock and increased the risk of a no-deal Brexit".

Earlier, the Commons was in uproar after it emerged the Speaker had allowed MPs the chance to have a major influence on the Brexit process through simply amending a business motion, which would set out the run of play.

"This vote is an important step to prevent a no-deal Brexit".

May's fellow Conservative Party colleagues who support a hard Brexit, which would entail cutting nearly all ties to the EU.

Mrs May's latest reverse came the day after MPs voted to limit ministers' ability to raise taxes in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

However, Mrs May did receive some support on Wednesday when Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte both pledged to try and help her win approval for her Brexit deal next week.

The vote, which saw 20 legislators from May's Conservative Party rebel and side with the opposition, indicates that a majority in Parliament opposes leaving the European Union without an agreement and will try to stop it happening.

The government had also been defeated on Tuesday night as MPs sent a powerful signal they will not accept a "no-deal" Brexit.

Justice minister Rory Stewart questioned the basis of Mr Bercow's decision, telling the BBC: "It is a very, very unusual thing that he did".

"I've been in contact with European leaders. about MPs' concerns".

In the Commons, Tory anger was directed at the Speaker, who many MPs have long suspected is unduly sympathetic to the Remain cause.

Mr Bercow said he had consulted privately with the clerk and other officials, but did not confirm his decision was taken with agreement from Sir David. I genuinely think we can't do it on March 29 this year.

"We're all focused in the government on winning parliamentary support in the vote that's coming up next week", he told reporters as he arrived at the meeting in Brussels.
