Pompeo Meets Top Iraqi Officials During Unannounced Visit to Baghdad

Morass in the Middle East: Top Diplomats Dispatched to Defend US Policy

"America is a force for good in the Middle East", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday in Cairo, in an expansive speech in which the top us diplomat repudiated the Obama administration's Middle East policies and accused it of making crucial errors that worsened a string of crises in the region.

The announcement had shocked U.S. allies and sparked strong criticism in Washington. I don't know the way this presence may be formatted and whether it will be open or secret. In Turkey's case, it appears to have emboldened Mr Erdoğan, who was reported to have asked the USA to hand over its 22 military bases in Syria or dismantle them. "I wish I were wrong", Rybakov continued in response to a question from Russian state media.

The comments were an example of the perspective that many Russian officials hold, which posits that the U.S.is an imperialist power working to maintain global hegemony.

Turkey has no right to wage a war of aggression against a US ally in Syria.

Following the meeting at the presidential complex, Dunford separately met Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar and his Turkish counterpart General Yasar Guler.

The top Turkish diplomat said the withdrawal should be coordinated with Iran and Russian Federation to prevent terrorists from taking up the vacated regions.

The top USA diplomat is on a Middle East tour, making stops in Jordan, Egypt and several Gulf nations in a bid to coordinate a joint anti-Iran campaign.

"President Trump has reversed our willful blindness to the danger of the regime and withdrew from the failed nuclear deal, with its false promises", Pompeo said.

"ISIS is defeated militarily but the mission is not accomplished", Salih said, using an acronym for Islamic State.

The announcement shocked allies and several U.S. defence officials, including Defence Secretary James Mattis, resigned shortly afterwards.

Regional leaders have been clear about their fear of Iran, which has launched scores of attacks against US allied forces in Syria and elsewhere in the years since the Obama administration freed up billions of cash windfalls for the Islamic Republic as part of the now-defunct nuclear deal.

Mr Pompeo was speaking in Cairo three weeks after President Donald Trump said USA troops were pulling out of Syria.

He did not give details, such as a timetable, leaving bewildered US partners in the region jockeying for influence over terms of a withdrawal.

As for how the Trump administration's policies are being perceived by Mideast leaders, NPR's Jane Arraf reports from Baghdad, "This is a new era, and part of that new era is a belief that the United States is more than willing to look the other way [from] repression and human rights abuses in countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, if there are security or economic benefits".

In a recent case of an American suspected of IS membership, US officials wrestled for more than a year, never charged him and then ultimately released him in Bahrain.

On Monday, John Bolton declared that the Trump administration's plan to pull US forces out of Syria is conditioned on protecting the Kurdish warriors who bore the brunt of our fight to defeat ISIS. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall. On Monday, he tweeted that the battle to defeat ISIS was still ongoing.

'The Failing New York Times has knowingly written a very inaccurate story on my intentions on Syria. "No different from my original statements, we will be leaving at a proper pace while at the same time continuing to fight ISIS and doing all else that is prudent and necessary!".
