Toyota recalls 1.7-million cars over Takata airbag defects

Recalls have been a problem for Toyota since 2009 with Takata airbag inflators being a particularly widespread problem

Toyota announced Wednesday the recall of 1.7 million vehicles in North America to replace potentially deadly Takata front passenger air bag inflators, according to the Associated Press.

Like other Takata-related recalls, the fault revolves around airbags propellant that could degrade over time due to exposure to high temperatures and humidity.

The sprawling recall concerned 4Runner SUVs from model years 2010 to 2016, Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks from 2010 to 2013 and Sienna minivans from 2011 to 2014.

The affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles were manufactured between 2010 and 2017. Also included is the Scion XB, 2010 through 2015. Ford and Honda have already announced recalls.

In February 2018, the recall of vehicles affected by the faulty Takata airbags was made compulsory under law, with affected manufacturers required to replace all defective airbags by the end of 2020. Previously, 37 million USA vehicles with 50 million inflators were recalled and 16.7 million inflators remain to be replaced.

About 20 people have died in accidents linked to the defect while the number of wounded is near 300.

It is more than three years after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took over management of recalls involving Takata inflators.

Founded in 1933, Takata went of business in June 2017 because of the crisis. In April, auto components maker Key Safety Systems completed a US$1.6 billion (RM6.58 billion) deal to acquire Takata.
