As Bezos divorce unfurls, investors wonder - what does it mean for Amazon?

Sundance Party in Park City Utah Jan. 22 2005

Not long after Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he and his wife MacKenzie were divorcing, news began to surface of Jeff Bezos's new girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez.

Bezos, who was recently named the richest man in the world, and wife MacKenzie Bezos announced their split in a statement on the billionaire's Twitter account on Wednesday, writing that they had chose to continue their "shared lives as friends". The couple owned a home in Seattle and have socialised with the Bezoses in the past, the New York Post reported.

"But a source told the publication that the couple has been on and off for a while and have been separated, adding: "[Patrick] knew they were seeing each other".

PEOPLE confirmed Sanchez is also divorcing her husband of 13 years, Patrick Whitesell. In 2005, Sanchez landed the role as the original host of So You Think You Can Dance, but left the show after one season to have her second child, People reported.

She's not just a newswoman and actress - Sanchez is also a helicopter pilot. "As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have made a decision to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends", read the statement signed by both of them".

Thomas Forte, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, said questions about the future of the company due to the divorce are legitimate due to Jeff Bezos' outsized influence on its value.

Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, did not address the financial terms of their divorce when announcing their split in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The divorce is further complicated by the fact the couple reside in Washington in the U.S. which is a "community property state" which means all assets and debts accrued during the marriage are considered equally owned by both spouses, unless a prenuptial agreement states otherwise.

"I wish him luck", Trump said outside the White House to reporters who asked Thursday about the personal headlines swirling around Bezos, whom the president has regularly demonized both for Bezos' fortunes at Amazon and his ownership of the Washington Post, which has closely and critically covered Trump's administration.

The Bezos - who met before Amazon struck it rich - didn't have a prenup, TMZ reports.

The couple could have devised a postnuptial agreement to do so on their own, and likely have a deal meant to not rock Amazon. "Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends".

Bezos issued a statement on their separation, saying that "we feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other".
