Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify publicly before Congress

He went on: "I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired".

President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen will testify publicly in front of the House Oversight Committee on February 7, the committee announced Thursday. "We have no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations, and to that end, we are in the process of consulting with Special Counsel Mueller's office", Cummings said in a statement.

Cummings said that Oversight Committee, which is also slated to take on increases in prescription drug prices later this month, would announce more information about the hearing in the coming weeks.

Cohen's testimony will come one month before the start of a three-year prison term, which he received for lying to Congress, tax crimes, and campaign finance violations resulting, he says, from his duty to cover up Trump's "dirty deeds". He is due to report to prison in early March.

Cohen, in an interview with ABC News in December, scoffed at that assertion. He said he's speaking with Mueller's office to prevent that. It is likely to pull back the curtain on key episodes involving Trump's personal life and business dealings, including hush-money payments to women and a proposed Moscow real estate deal, that federal prosecutors have been dissecting for months. Cohen has already pleaded guilty to previously making false statements to Congress, in 2017 to a Senate intelligence committee about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

"Mr. Cohen knows where a good numerous bodies were buried during the Trump campaign", Riopelle said.

"I'm not anxious about it at all", he said.

Former U.S. federal prosecutor Roland Riopelle called it "a very frightening development" for Trump. Under federal law, it is illegal for corporations to make expenditures to influence an election in coordination with or at the request of a candidate or campaign. Trump has denied having the extramarital affairs.

In the interview with Stephanopoulos, however, Cohen rejected Trump's claims as "absolutely not true".

The president, "knows the truth", Cohen said.

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and Trump's television defense lawyer, lashed out against Michael Cohen.

Cummings has signaled that his committee is more interested in investigating the president's involvement in the campaign violations to which Cohen pleaded guilty past year.

"There will be limitations", Cummings said.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said he hoped to schedule a closed-door hearing with Cohen later to discuss the Russian Federation probe. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said he welcomes Cohen's testimony before the oversight panel, but "it will be necessary, however, for Mr. Cohen to answer questions pertaining to the Russian Federation investigation, and we hope to schedule a closed session before our committee in the near future".

"We hope to schedule a closed session before our committee in the near future", Schiff said.
