Helicopter Accidentally Decapitates Man in Florida

A man was decapitated in a helicopter accident at a Florida airport Thursday, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

A man has died in Florida, having been struck by a helicopter blade.

A mechanic was decapitated by the rotor blade of a helicopter after it rose into the air unexpectedly while he worked on it. He died instantly, police said.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis says his department was called to the airport at 3:30 p.m. where officers quickly learned about the death. A caller told 911 that he and Disi were working on the helicopter and using a power auto to jumpstart it.

It is being treated as a tragic accident, and foul play is not suspected.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said: 'The deceased (Sal DiSi) was an acquaintance of my family for many years. "It's tragic that those individuals are not going to be able to give their loved one a hug again". Officials have launched an investigation into the incident.

This is the helicopter which decapitated maintenance worker Alfred DiSi Thursday afternoon. The surgeon was at the scene when the accident unfolded, WFLA reported.

The aircraft involved in the fatal incident appears to be a 1993 Bell 230 twin-engine light helicopter, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. The Sheriff's Office has reported it to the Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
