Trump vows revamp of H1-B skill visas - including potential citizenship

Trump has refused to sign on to a bill unless it includes $5.6 billion to build a wall along the country's southern border to prevent illegal immigration by migrants.

DACA recipient Hilario Yanez on why he supports President Trump's border wall.

"H1-B holders in the United States can rest assured that changes are soon coming which will bring both simplicity and certainty to your stay, including a potential path to citizenship", Trump tweeted.

"We want to encourage talented and highly skilled people to pursue career options in the USA", he added.

The H-1B is non-immigrant visa that allows USA employers to hire graduate-level workers in specialty occupations, like IT, finance, accounting, architecture, engineering, science and medicine. Trump repeatedly said during the election that Mexico would pay for the wall but backtracked from that position Thursday and is said to be considering tapping emergency disaster funds instead. But after seeing Trump's tweet Friday, he said that the "administration has used every tool at its disposal to restrict legal immigration across the board" and "it's no wonder that many companies and immigrants believe that the H-1B program is under siege".

He was referring to a set of rule changes that were proposed by the administration last December to introduce electronic registration of petitioners to replace the lottery system, which is meant to make the process less expensive, simpler and certain - to "reduce overall costs for petitioners and create a more efficient and cost-effective H-1B cap petition process".

"This will improve the number of black, Hispanic and female workers in Silicon Valley who have been passed over in favor of the H-1B program", the Trump campaign stated in August 2015.

H-1B visa-holders are often sponsored by their employers for permanent residency (better known as Green Card), which is a step away from citizenship.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump proposed increasing the prevailing wage paid to the visa holders in an effort to force companies to give entry-level jobs to an existing pool of unemployed workers. The Schumer-Rubio immigration bill was nothing more than a giveaway to the corporate patrons who run both parties.

Real immigration reform puts the needs of working people first - not wealthy globetrotting donors.
