Amazon cloud gaming service to release in 2020

Now, Amazon is throwing its hat into the game-streaming ring, according to a report from The Information.

According to a report by The Information [Paywall], the plans are already in motion, with Amazon reportedly now negotiating with game publishers to be able to distribute their titles through its service.

And game streaming in general looks to be something that'll start taking off either this year or next, as Microsoft has its badly named Project XCloud, aimed at streaming Xbox One games to all manner of devices.

Two sources told the publication that Amazon was looking to enter the cloud gaming market in 2020. "Streaming services represent a potentially significant shift in the games business by, in some cases, eliminating the need for players to purchase expensive hardware, such as consoles or PCs, to run the most elaborate titles", according to The Information. This service, as with PS Now, will reportedly allow customers to stream video games over the Internet, making it possible to access titles without paying for them individually.

Following up on the rumour, The Verge spotted two job openings listed by Amazon for engineers in Seattle, both specifying they'd be working on "Cloud Games".

The service will see Amazon compete with Google - which is now testing its Project Stream service in the USA - as well as Microsoft, which is building its own platform, hardware maker Nvidia, and publisher Electronic Arts.
