Australian coach Justin Langer loses his cool over Glenn Maxwell claims

The latest omission of Maxwell for Australia's series against Sri Lanka has re-ignited debate about his treatment, with the focus centred around the all-rounder's decision not to pursue an England county contract previous year in the belief he would be chosen for an Australia A tour of India.

Virat Kohli's side took the four-match series 2-1 and would likely have won the final test in Sydney had rain not intervened over the last two days as the contest, in which Australia were made to follow-on, ended in a damp draw on Monday. After not being picked for the series against Pakistan in UAE, Maxwell was asked to prove himself in the first-class cricket. After two rounds of this, Langer was asked who gave the directive to which he replied: "Did it happen?". "Careless whispers, hey", he added before apologising. Sorry for getting grumpy. "I don't like getting grumpy but there are so many stories that go around about so much stuff. I didn't mean to get grumpy, but the truth is a attractive thing", Langer apologized.

Maxwell's absence from the team sheet read out by chief selector Trevor Hohns on Wednesday has been a major talking point in the 24 hours since. The question centered around an assertion an unnamed member of Cricket Australia's National Selection Panel provided messaging Maxwell prior to Australia A's tour of India in 2018 that led to the allrounder opting not to pursue an opportunity to play county cricket.

Langer turned on a journalist and repeatedly pressed the reporter before moving on, then saying "careless whispers" and finally apologising.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, CA confirmed that Maxwell was sent a "planning email" in April, suggesting he rest between the white ball tours of England and Zimbabwe and the Australia A tour of India a few weeks later.

Justin Langer gets some advice from former Australia team-mate Shane Warne.

Glenn Maxwell last featured in a Test match back in 2017.

Global duties with the white ball have prevented Maxwell from putting forward a strong case in Sheffield Shield cricket and while chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns denied the 30-year-old's personality was a factor in his repeated snubbing, Quiney wasn't buying it.

During the media conference, Langer had addressed Maxwell's omission from the Test squad for Sri Lanka and the "false" reports about the right-hander's personality as a contributing factor to his selection chances, reinforcing the message Hohns delivered.

Opener Renshaw last played a test on the tour of South Africa last March, when he was a late call-up after Cameron Bancroft and David Warner were stood down for their role in a ball-tampering scandal.

"All the conjecture about it, that's all part of the noise".
