Browns to Hire Cleveland Native Mike Priefer as New Special Teams Coordinator

Reports: Mike Priefer departs as Vikings' special teams coordinator, will join Browns

The Minnesota Vikings will have a new special teams coordinator in 2019.

Amos Jones, who coached the Browns special teams last season, was dismissed after the team hired Kitchens.

Mike Priefer is out as the Minnesota Vikings special teams coach.

That announcement is coming, eventually, and Kitchens has been working since Wednesday as the head coach.

In 2016, he served as the Vikings head coach for one game as Mike Zimmer had emergency eye surgery.

That desire could soon become a reality as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Cleveland Browns have begun to poke around Spagnuolo and could look to hire him as their next defensive coordinator.

Since 2011, Priefer has been running the special teams for the Vikings.

Wilks, who was the Panthers' assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2017 and a former defensive backs coach for the Panthers, Chargers and Bears, was sacked after 1 season in Arizona that saw the Cardinals go 3-13 resulting in landing the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Under Wilks and defensive coordinator Al Holcomb, the Cardinals had the worst rushing defense per game (154.9), which negated any good things they did by allowing the fourth-fewest passing yards per game (203.9).

Spagnuolo spent two separate stints with the Giants as their defensive coordinator from 2007-2008 and then again from 2015-2017 before taking over as the interim head coach following the termination of Ben McAdoo.
