Democratic Hawaii Rep. Gabbard running for president in 2020

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard told CNN's Van Jones during an interview to air Saturday.

Gabbard's announcement comes after the progressive congresswoman was the headline speaker at a December meet-and-greet with Democrat activists in Exeter, New Hampshire, where she told local reporters that a White House bid was on the table.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace", Gabbard added. "I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement", which will come within the next week, Gabbard said.

Gabbard was one of the most prominent lawmakers to back Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary. Gabbard has also drawn criticism for secretly meeting with Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, whose removal from power she opposes, during a 2017 trip to the war-ravaged country.

She made waves recently for saying in a tweet that President Trump is "Saudi Arabia's bitch" for announcing the USA will stand with Saudi Arabia, regardless of any intelligence community assessment on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's involvement in the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. She served in a medical unit of the Hawaii National Guard and was deployed in Kuwait and Iraq.

Gabbard, a native of American Samoa, was elected to the Hawaii State Legislature in 2002 at the age of 21, the youngest woman to be elected to a state legislature in USA history at the time.

Inspired by the party's strong showing in the November midterms, a number of Democrats are eager to challenge Trump in the 2020 presidential election. On New Year's Eve, Sen.

"Tulsi Gabbard has an even bigger problem than her lack of experience - it's that she has no base of support", RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens wrote in a statement released Friday evening.

"I have made a decision to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard said. Kamala Harris. Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney has already announced a campaign. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee at the end of past year.
