Donations to border wall GoFundMe to be refunded

The GoFundMe campaign for Trump's border wall is refunding donors

A Florida veteran's GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a border wall will be refunding money to its donors after falling short of the $1 billion goal.

Brian Kolfage, the campaign's founder, assured donors Friday that because the campaign didn't reach its $1 billion goal, they would be refunded.

The non-profit company, We Build the Wall, Inc., is led by Kolfage and other prominent anti-immigration activists including private security expert and regular Trump consultant Erik Prince; David Clarke, the former Milwaukee sheriff and a favorite of Trump; and Kris Kobach, the conservative secretary of state of Kansas. I am honoring that commitment today.

GoFundMe will allow donors to divert their money to We Fund The Wall if they so choose; however, if donors fail to respond to a GoFundMe email, their contribution will automatically be refunded.

"We Build the Wall" has assembled a board of directors led by Kolfage and engaged an impressive team of advisors to provide critical guidance on the project's legal, engineering, contracting, environmental, accounting, maintenance, and real estate issues and serve on the advisory board and or the construction, finance and or audit committees.

Kolfage set up a campaign called Fight4FreeSpeech in response to the Facebook ban, which also accepts donations.

In a statement on January 11, Kolfage explained the choice to create a 501 (c)(4). Kolfage said that he hopes the money raised "will jumpstart things" and "be less money Trump has to secure from our politicians".

Kolfage's will now attempt to build the wall without going through government channels, and is instead asking people to redirect their donations to a new non-profit organization. "I personally will not take a penny of compensation from these donations incurred in the furtherance of this mission".

"Better equipped than our own federal government, we have made significant progress in less than a month, having begun extensive due diligence and commenced feasibility studies", Kolfage said.

But donations slowed and Kolfage said the group had concluded that the government won't be able to make use of them in the foreseeable future.

While there are a range of estimates to fully build a border wall along the southern border, many estimates exceed $20 billion.

U.S President Donald Trump's border wall prototypes stand near the U.S. -Mexico border in San Diego, Calif., on July 16, 2018. "Our team strongly believes that we can complete our segments of the wall for less than half of the government's estimated costs on a per mile basis".
