Eddie Murphy Confirms ‘Coming To America’ Sequel Is In The Works

Coming to America

Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is reworking a script by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, who wrote the original Coming to America, while Murphy is among the producers. Brewer's other credits include the series Empire and the films Footloose, Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow.

The sequel will reportedly see Akeem, who spent the first movie searching NY for a bride after he grew exhausted of potential partners in awe of his royal status, learning of a long lost son in America.

The 57-year-old comedian went on to reveal that the film has already locked in Craig Brewer, who directed him in the forthcoming film, Dolemite.

One of your favourite classic, Coming To America is making a comeback with its sequel.

Apparently numerous original characters will return as well, including Arsenio Hall as Akeem's assistant Seemi, Shar Headley, whom Akeem found in New York, John Amos, who played her father, and James Earl Jones, who depicted Akeem's father the king. "We've assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an wonderful job on Dolemite [Is My Name], and I'm looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen". Murphy was apparently eager to work with Brewer again and Coming to America 2 provided that opportunity. "From Hustle & Flow to his work with Eddie on Dolemite Is My Name, he never fails to blow me away".

The 1988 film, Coming to America upon its release became the highest grossing film in the United States, topped several box office charts, $28 million in five days and $288,752,301 in total. "He is a true auteur and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him on board".

There isn't a start date for production yet, but they're hoping to start this year. Let us know in the comments!
