Jeb Bush: GOP 'Must Actively Support' Primary Challenger to Steve King

Steve King

Pelosi said Friday. "The new normal around here is to praise white supremacists and nationalism as something that shouldn't be shunned". His mistake, he explained, was in talking to the Times in the first place.

"It's not enough to condemn [King's] unconscionable, racist remarks", Bush wrote in a tweet, in response to a story from The Hill reporting that the head of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., wouldn't say whether the party will support King in his next election.

"As I told the New York Times, it's not about race, it's never been about race", he continued.

Scott goes on to remind Rep. King about crimes committed in the name of white supremacy in this country, including when a white supremacist murdered nine African Americans in a church in Charleston, S.C.in 2015, or when a white nationalist ran over a young woman in Charlottesville previous year, and just three months ago when a white supremacist killed two black people in a parking lot in Kentucky. He has tried to defend himself from the blowback to the Times interview, saying that the outlet has meant to paint him as an "advocate for white nationalism and white supremacy" - but he didn't deny the accuracy of the quote.

"One of my most strongly held beliefs is that we are all created in God's image and that human life is sacred in all its forms", he said.

King said he wasn't complaining that he couldn't freely use terms like white supremacist, but rather that he was asking how terms like that got into political discussions.

King read into the record a statement he put out after the New York Times article published saying in part, "I reject those labels and the evil ideology they define". The Anti-Defamation League admonished King for the meeting.

Those looking for a significant primary challenge to King may find hope in Iowa State Senator Randy Feenstra, who announced earlier this week that he is taking steps to run against the incumbent in the GOP primary next year.

When people with opinions similar to King's open their mouths, they damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole. They want to be treated with fairness for some perceived slights but refuse to return the favor to those on the other side.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy criticized King on Thursday, saying his "language is reckless, wrong and has no place in our society".

King described himself - "like the Founding Fathers" - as an advocate for Western values and "simply a nationalist". But ultimately, Jennings is not surprised the president and King continue to be friendly.

He also said: "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies".

Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives on Friday, he said he regretted "the heartburn that has poured forth" as a result of his interview.
