New York Yankees Sign DJ LeMahieu, Is Machado Out?

The Yankees agreed to a two-year contract with second baseman DJ LeMahieu on Friday, according to the YES Network's Jack Curry.

Former Rockies All-Star DJ LeMahieu has reached a two-year deal with NY that will pay him $24 million, The Athletic and ESPN reported Friday.

LeMahieu will reportedly make $24 million over the next two seasons in the Bronx.

This move nearly guarantees that the Yankees are out of the race for Manny Machado.

LeMahieu isn't just a good defensive player, he's great with the glove. Even though he's another right-handed bat in a lineup filled with them LeMaheiu's bat to ball skills should help the Yankees become a more balanced offense that doesn't always rely on hitting the ball over the fence. The Yankees are expected to use LeMahieu in a variety of positions next season.

LeMahieu authored a.276/.321/.428 slash line with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs in 128 games for the Colorado Rockies in 2018.

LeMahieu has also started 41 games in his career at third base and one game at first base.

He's also a guy who puts the ball in play at a very high rate, only averaging 84 K's over the last three seasons. Didi Gregorius will regain his role as the team's shortstop in 2020 and by choosing their current route, the club has signaled that they prefer Miguel Andujar as their long term option at third base. The Yankees have not publicly made Machado an offer - and with LeMahieu, Andujar, Torres, and Tulowitzki now - they may never get to that point.

Brian Cashman has a well-earned reputation for making moves out of absolutely nowhere.
