Not so fast: Gary Kubiak reportedly won't run Broncos' offense after all

The announcement of Kubiak returning to Denver as the offensive coordinator was met with praise around the league when news broke Wednesday.

When the Broncos hired Vic Fangio to be their next head coach earlier this week, it was widely assumed that Gary Kubiak would become the team's offensive coordinator. While Gary Kubiak was expected to take on that role, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday the two sides could not come to an official agreement.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Kubiak, who coached the Broncos from 2015-16, wanted to bring back familiar faces on the coaching staff, but the Broncos wanted "to move things forward on offense."

But the team didn't want them back.

Since then, Kubiak has worked as a senior personnel adviser for the Broncos. The Broncos are seeking permission from the Pittsburgh Steelers to speak with Mike Munchak about coaching their offensive line.

Munchak reportedly impressed the Broncos during his interview last week as part of the team's search for a new head coach, and he also has family ties to the Denver area.

Kubiak's zone-run scheme seemed like a flawless fit, much in the way his offense fit seventh-round pick Justin Forsett in Baltimore.
