PSL 2019: Elbow injury rules Steve Smith out of the tournament

Steve Smith in Bangladesh. More

Ex-Australia captain Steve Smith will have elbow surgery and may not be fit to make his global return from a 12-month ban at the end of March.

Smith, whose suspension from state and worldwide cricket in Australia elapses on March 28, will go under the knife on Tuesday and be in a brace for six weeks with a period of recuperation to follow.

Smith is now serving a one-year ban from global cricket, Australia's domestic Sheffield Shield and Big Bash leagues over a ball-tampering scandal during a Test match in South Africa last March.

Smith, 29, returned from the Bangladesh Premier League for scans on the injured joint before it was decided he would have surgery. Then, he will have to wear a brace for six weeks and undergo extensive rehabilitation. Although it is too early to predict a return date for Smith, an immediate surgery would give him a few months' time ahead of the World Cup.

Steven Smith played two matches for Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League, where he scored 16 and zero. A Cricket Australia spokesperson while confirming the need for surgery said that Smith's return to playing will be made clearer once the brace is removed.

However, it is still uncertain when Steven Smith and David Warner will return to global cricket, limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch said that both are welcomed in the team.
