Statement by Premier Ford on the OC Transpo Bus Crash

The first seats on the upper level of the bus were crushed together

The bus crash that killed three people and injured as many as 17 happened at Westboro bus station, a transit access point that accommodates several routes west of downtown Ottawa.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson told a news conference that three people died and 23 were injured in the "horrific" crash - including 14 critically, according to paramedic services.

1310 NEWS' Mark Sutcliffe is set to host two hours of special programming, following a devastating bus crash at Westboro Station.

Ottawa Hospital's trauma center said it had received nine patients "in critical condition" from the crash.

Ottawa police chief Charles Bordeleau said the bus driver was arrested at the scene and taken in for questioning, but he declined to provide further details.

Photos posted on Twitter showed extensive damage to the front of the bus, with the roof of a shelter having carved deep into the vehicle's second deck after the vehicle jumped the curb and plowed along the platform.

He said police are now investigating what caused the collision; six officers were on site to look into the matter.

The investigation will take a long time and likely will mean the closure of the busway and nearby roads for at least many hours, Bordeleau said. Another was wheeled on a gurney in obvious distress, wailing loudly enough to be heard on an overpass above.

Afternoon traffic snarled around the station as dozens of emergency personnel descended on the scene.

Part of the Transitway, a main artery for commuters, was closed in the aftermath of the accident, and police warned people to stay away from the area.

OC Transpo, which is in charge of Ottawa's public transportation, tweeted on its verified account, "Buses are being detoured as a result" of the collision.

The bus has a capacity of 90 people, both sitting and standing.
