Syrian air defences intercept 'missiles' near Damascus: State media

Syrian air defense systems intercept Israeli missiles in the skies near Damascus late

Syrian air defense systems were immediately activated to confront the "hostile targets", and managed to intercept "most" of the missiles, the source claimed.

Syrian state media broadcast footage of what it said were the air defences firing, with bright lights seen shooting across the night sky.

Syrian air defense systems thus had to limit their response to avoid civilian casualties, so two of the sixteen Israeli-launched laser-guided bombs reportedly reached their targets, wounding three people.

"At 11:15, Israeli fighter jets fired several missiles towards the area of Damascus, and instantly, our air defences confronted the missiles and downed majority", the source told SANA.

An AFP correspondent in Damascus heard several loud explosions.

Israel has mounted attacks in Syria as part of its efforts to counter the influence carved out there by Iran, which is supporting President Bashar al-Assad in the war that erupted in 2011.

The Israeli regime launches airstrikes on the Syrian territory from time to time, aggressive moves usually viewed as attempts to prop up terrorist groups that have been suffering defeats at the hands of Syrian government forces. He said the targets were primarily storage and logistics facilities used by Iran to ship weapons to Hezbollah. On that occasion an erroneous Syrian anti-aircraft missile flew into Israeli airspace, and was destroyed by Israeli air defenses. Fenianos said Lebanon will present a complaint to the UN Security Council.

In October, Moscow equipped Damascus with the advanced S-300 surface-to-air missiles, days after Israeli fighter jets attacked Syrian targets using a Russian surveillance plane flying nearby as a shield and hence misleading the Syrian air defenses to shoot it down.
