Flu season in the US: Estimated 6-7 million cases to date

Travelers warned of swine flu risk in Georgia

Officials from the New York State Health Department announced this week that the flu is spreading rapidly throughout the state, with some hospitals reportedly limiting visitation to prevent the spread of the virus.

Like the three previous deaths, the department said the latest victim was over the age of 50.

Three people have died from the flu in ME so far this season, according to the state's Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In South Carolina, health officials have reported widespread activity for two consecutive weeks.

Southern Saskatchewan is seeing an outbreak of H1N1, with this season's flu strain proving deadly.

"These new in-season estimates fill out the picture of the burden of flu in the United States", the agency said in a statement, adding that they will be updated weekly.

"Reports of positive influenza cases are dependent on who gets tested for influenza (flu), so the high number of cases in Northern Manitoba may be partially due to more testing being done in the region", said Gesell.

"Severe flu outcomes are a somber reminder of how serious flu can be, even for otherwise healthy people". "We do know, however, that the main influenza virus circulating this year (H1N1) is the same virus that circulated in the 2009 pandemic, which also more severely impacted northern communities".

Laurentiu Givelichian, the head of pediatrics for the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Health Authority, said that in his province the flu isn't just affecting more kids than usual - it's making them sicker, too. "It does not, and the vaccine is safe for pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy", he said.

The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, though there is still time to get vaccinated. "This is one of the reasons it is so important to get vaccinated".

The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has already advised people to take precautions to protect themselves from the flu.

But getting sick with flu early in pregnancy makes it twice as likely to have a baby with birth defects of the brain, spine or heart, Gupta said.
