Google discontinues Chromecast Audio, grab them while they last

The company's support representatives are telling people that Google has "a variety of products for users to enjoy audio" and therefore have chose to stop "manufacturing our Chromecast Audio products". Google in the last couple of years has also struck deals with speaker makers like to add Google Assistant to their speakers, and hence turn them, smart speakers, negating the need for something like Chromecast audio.

Another day, another dead Google product. In India too, the Chromecast Audio is out of stock in most places. The company will sell off the remaining stock of the dongle and it seems that inventory won't be replenished once Google and other vendors have sold out of the tiny dongle. "We have therefore stopped manufacturing our Chromecast Audio products". The company will continue to offer support to existing Chromecast Audio users, however. While being a fantastic add-on to traditionally "dumb" speakers, the Chromecast Audio never really caught on for the general public.

With the myriad speakers available with Chromecast functionality baked in, consumers won't be hurting for ways to stream music at home, but the discontinuation of Chromecast Audio is still a crying shame.

The sound quality of the Chromecast's internal DAC is exactly what we might expect from a US$35 device - nothing special - but for a better-sounding Chromecast experience, we tap the 3.5mm socket's mini-TOSLINK digital output for connection to an external DAC.

The hardware itself has had a good run.

Google just discontinued one of its best and most underrated products, the Chromecast Audio.
