Gov. DeSantis to speak on holding 'government officials accountable'

DeSantis signed an executive order to implement major water reforms. He visited Bonita Springs Sarasota and Stuart to speak about the policy

The executive order also asks the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to appoint a Chief Science Officer, "so that we're doing sound science, making sure that we're getting ahead of the curve on as many of these issues as possible", said the governor.

Lagoa's selection also drew praise from the business-backed Florida Justice Reform Institute, which, in a statement, called DeSantis' appointment "the first step towards fulfilling his promise to appoint judges who will interpret the law and not legislate from the bench". Now, that's not going to be like the old state planes where the Cabinet and other people could do it. "She understands the rule of law, how important that is to a society".

During his successful campaign, DeSantis told supporters that he hoped to alter the judiciary in Florida "for a generation" through the three vacancies.

Justice Lagoa has received numerous awards, including the "Outstanding Women of Color" award from the Black Law Student Association and the Caribbean Law Student Association at St. Thomas Law School.

"On Tuesday I laid out a vision including, and particularly, about protecting our water resources and environment", DeSantis said, referencing his inauguration speech.

"So, all and all, I think what we've done is really, really strong", DeSantis concluded before signing the order.

"Today, one of Hialeah's own sits on the Florida Supreme Court", Oliva said. I share the governor's concern that in recent years the power of the judicial branch has extended beyond its limited constitutional responsibility, in many cases eroding the authority of the legislative branch. "That's a game changer and that's why these appointments are so consequential", said Sayfie, who was an adviser to Gov. Jeb Bush.

In addition to her legal bona fides, Lagoa has a "great personal history", DeSantis said, pointing to the location of Wednesday's announcement, the Freedom Tower in Miami, as symbolic of his choice.

The governor recalled that, when he announced Nuñez as his running-mate a year ago, he said "Jeanette's life, what she's done, was really an inspiration to a lot of young women". "In the world of judicial appointments, Barbara Lagoa is a home run". The 17-story tower, built in 1925 as a newspaper headquarters, is a symbol of hope, freedom and democracy - like New York's Ellis Island for generations of European immigrants - for many in the Cuban American community. Her father-in-law is Miami senior U.S. District Judge Paul C. Huck and her husband, Paul C. Huck Jr., is a prominent Miami attorney. "It is my pleasure and my privilege to appoint Barbara Lagoa to the Florida Supreme Court with full confidence she will serve our state with the utmost integrity".

She received received her juris doctor from Columbia University in 1992, where she served as an associate editor of the Columbia Law Review. She was also a member of many local, state, and national professional groups, including the Dade County and American Bar Associations.

Former Florida governor Rick Scott, also a Republican, pledged to add the protections following the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub that left 49 LGBTQ people dead and dozens wounded. Cantero and current Justice Jorge Labarga are Cuban-Americans.
