Mayor De Blasio Shuts Down Rumors About Possible Presidency Bid

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday (Jan 9) unveiled a proposal to require companies to give employees 10 days of paid time off, in what would be a first for the United States. Some Americans want to see the health initiative replicated nationwide. "Today we yet again pave the path towards a new generation of workers' rights that meet the needs and realities of today's workforce with the right to paid time off - a win-win for workers, employers, and our economy".

De Blasio said the city would be cracking down on bad landlords with the new Mayor's Office to Protect Tenants.

NYC Care is set to launch later this year in the Bronx borough, becoming available across the entire city by 2021, according to a statement.

Council Member Espinal, chair of the City Council's Committee on Consumer Affairs, said he was encouraged that the Consumer Protection agency would be expanded to include worker protections.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said he will pursue local legislation that would require private employers with five or more employees to offer 10 annual days of paid personal time, allowing employees to take paid time off for any objective.

"I'm not aware of any other state or city that requires it", said Rick McGahey, an economist at the New School for Social Research who served as an assistant secretary for policy in the U.S. Labor Department during the Clinton administration. The law would exempt firms with fewer than five employees from the requirement.

"New York City has the opportunity to do something historic here", said de Blasio. Part-time workers would fall under a mandate allowing them to accrue paid time off at a guaranteed minimum rate.

Councilmember Jumaane Williams said he was optimistic about de Blasio's progressive tone. Those land deals often (but not always) come with public subsidies.

"Everyone will be assigned a primary doctor", said de Blasio. As New Yorkers experience serious disturbances or harassment from construction, they can call upon the OTA for assistance.
