Northwestern BC First Nation expects RCMP to enforce injunction

He said the government was mindful of the opposition at the Unist'ot'en camp but has been in dialogue with the hereditary chiefs.

Monday's arrests were made as the RCMP enforced a court injunction against members of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation who oppose the pipeline by preventing access to the area where the pipeline is planned. "I would love to be able to say to you it's really simple, but it's not".

The Mounties have been enforcing a court injunction granting workers with the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline project access to a road and bridge from which they had been blocked by opponents of the project.

"We would like to once again emphasize that the RCMP's focus remains on creating an environment conducive to getting all parties to come to the table and continue to participate in these fruitful discussions".

Canadians are getting a crash course on the differences between non-elected hereditary chiefs and band councils elected by First Nations as RCMP arrests at a blockade in northern British Columbia launched pipeline protests across the country this week.

The Coastal GasLink pipeline would run though the Wet'suwet'en territory to LNG Canada's $40 billion export terminal in Kitimat, B.C.

They also dismantled a nearby checkpoint erected by members of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation, who say the company does not have authority to work on their territory without consent from the nation's hereditary clan chiefs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was to visit Kamloops, B.C., on Wednesday and Cullen expected Trudeau would face some pointed questions during a townhall meeting in the evening.

"We know we can not do it without creating partnerships and engaging with Indigenous Peoples who are the traditional custodians of these lands, without thinking deeply about the environmental consequences and the long-term impacts of the choices we're making".

"This is our home, we should feel safe in our home", she said.

Chief Na'Moks told residents, supporters and media gathered at the camp Wednesday that the decision has nothing to do with the pipeline company and everything to do with ensuring the safety of residents at the camp.

"It's the responsibilities of the two orders of government to figure that out", he said.

Furthermore, the RCMP will established a temporary detachment on the West Morice FSR, with officers posted there undergoing cultural awareness training on Wet'suwet'en traditions.

"We recognize that it may not be possible to get unanimous support for a major infrastructure project in B.C., but we believe Canada's economy can not prosper without a growing and healthy resource sector".

The B.C. Liberals have been demanding Donaldson's resignation.
