Indonesia Finds Cockpit Voice Recorder of Crashed Lion Air Boeing

Growing questions have been raised about the Lion Air plane’s previous flight

The 2-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after taking off from Jakarta on October 29, killing everyone on board.

Haryo Satmiko, deputy chief of Indonesia's transport safety committee (KNKT), was quoted by Reuters as saying that the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) had been found "but we have not received information of the location yet".

Families and colleagues of the victims of Lion Air flight JT610 pray and cry on the deck of an Indonesia Navy ship as they visit the site of the crash.

If the voice recorder is undamaged, it could provide valuable additional information to investigators.

Relatives of those who had died questioned why the plane had been cleared to fly after suffering problems on its Bali to Jakarta flight on October 28 that included a rapid descent after take-off that terrified passengers.

But it did not pinpoint a definitive cause of the crash and a final report is not likely to come before later this year.

Officials had said then that it could take up to six months to analyse data from the black boxes.

Authorities called off the grim task of identifying victims of the crash in November, with only 125 people identified after tests on human remains that filled some 200 body bags.

Investigators have now said that the plane was not airworthy, and should have been grounded.

The device was transported to a port in Jakarta, where it will be handed over to the transportation safety committee, which is overseeing the accident investigation.

It was the the world's first of a Boeing Co 737 MAX jet.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and global destinations.

The plane's flight data recorder showed that pilots had repeatedly tried to correct its nose from pointing down, possibly after erroneous data from AoA sensors was fed into a system that automatically adjusts some of its movements.
