Million People Have Already Been Sick With the Flu Says CDC

Arwin Hosseini receives his first flu shot in Toronto

For the week ending January 5, the cumulative rate stood at 9.1 influenza-associated hospitalizations per 100,000, compared with 22.7 per 100,000 a year ago.

Death estimates for adults who contracted the flu are not yet available, but as of late December, the CDC said that about 6% of deaths nationwide were due to influenza or pneumonia.

In California, Fresno County has seen six flu-related deaths since October, the Fresno Bee reported on Friday, while a total of 42 lives have been lost throughout the state, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Flu season is in full swing in the Hudson Valley, with dozens of reported cases now being treated by doctors in the area.

The CDC last month signalled https://www.cdc.gov/flu/spotlights/flu-activity-elevated.htm the start of the flu season, saying that 24 states and Guam were reporting widespread cases, with the H1N1 virus being the predominant strain.

In the first report of the season, roughly 6 million to 7 million people have been diagnosed with the flu this season, between 2.9 million and 3.5 million have sought treatment, and between 69,000 and 84,000 thousand of them have gone to the hospital for flu, according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It's early, but the current flu season is shaping up to be gentler than last winter's unusually brutal one, US health officials said.

"If people have not yet had the vaccine, it's not unusual that around this time, after the holidays, we might have a little bit more influenza activity", Murti said. It was the worst flu season in decades.

In New Brunswick, where no children have died with a lab-confirmed diagnosis of influenza, the virus still seems to be targeting a younger demographic than in the last few seasons.

The health agency also released new estimates of how the flu season is playing out.

If you haven't gotten a flu shot, it's not too late.
