CDC Plans on-the-Ground 'HIV Elimination Teams' for Trump Plan

President Trump pledged Tuesday to work toward eliminating AIDS

"We're ready to work with the president to help him achieve his goal to end AIDS by 2030", Louie said, but added, "He's not going to be able to keep his pledge if he doesn't follow the data, trust the science, display compassion for the most at-risk populations and set aside numerous prejudices he has inflamed since taking office".

Health Secretary Alex M. Azar II said Trump will seek "substantial new funds for the effort", another remark that stunned both Democrats and Republicans.

Getting more people tested for the virus is vital, Giroir told reporters Wednesday.

Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said in March 2017 that it was possible to end the AIDS in less than seven years. She says it's hard living with HIV and dealing with people's opinions. The government has "been trying to address HIV, but never in such a focused way", he said.

In addition, awareness activities are conducted amongst High Risk Groups including female sex workers, men having sex with Men, injecting drug users, transgenders and bridge population like truck drivers, migrants as part of targeted intervention projects.

Trump's initiative is expected to invest in existing programs as well as a new high-risk prevention program through community health centers.

Dr Anthony Fauci directs the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and has always been on the forefront of the fight against HIV/Aids.

During the address, Mayor Breed said of Dr. Colfax: "He knows our city and its challenges, and he is ready to get to work". "You have to be strong in order to endure the pain, the frustration, the confusion".

The path to such hope has been an arduous one.

In the United States, more than 1 million people aged 13 and older are living with HIV infection, with an estimated 15 percent unaware of their status, and approximately 56,000 new infections occur each year, according to National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Brian Mustanski directs the Institute for Sexual and Minority Health and Wellbeing at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

There are about 40,000 new cases of HIV infections a year in the U.S. That's a dramatic reduction from the crisis years of the AIDS epidemic, but progress has stalled.

"If we are going to end HIV transmissions in the USA, we need research to help understand how to effectively deliver the right interventions to the right communities at the right time", he said.

"Every 44 minutes, a 13- to 29-year-old gay or bisexual man in the United States gets diagnosed with HIV", Mustanski added. "These diagnoses are disproportionally among young men of colour - the only group in the U.S. to show increases in the rate of annual diagnoses. Any plan to end HIV transmission in the United States must centere on the needs of young gay and bisexual men of color in order to be successful".

Mustanski believes that any plan aimed at eradicating HIV transmission within a decade must make PrEP available to these underserved communities.

'I think the HIV community would work with the administration on this issue if they're serious, but it's also going to take real action, including possibly regulatory and legislative changes to achieve the goal, ' said McColl. African American and Hispanics are the most vulnerable group of HIV infections, but they are poorly covered by healthcare services like Medicaid and Medicare.

"Only a quarter of sexually active teen gay and bisexual boys have ever had an HIV test", Mustanski noted. But we also should not reject a plan to end the HIV epidemic by 2030 because of where it originated from, and those of us who are able to should do everything we can to mold this plan in our image at the same time we continue to fight back against the Trump administration on so many other fronts.
