Twitter says will stop reporting monthly active users

During the fourth quarter of 2018, Twitter announced that 126 million monetizable Daily Active Users visited the site on average each day.

"Twitter's Q4 earnings prove that the company is still able to grow its revenues without increasing its user base", she said.

Dorsey said the company's strategy is centered on four broad objectives: promoting healthy conversation on the platform, making it easier for users to participate in conversations, improving the platform for advertisers and focusing on new technology to improve the service.

However, the reveal is also giving investors and the general public a concrete idea of just how much smaller user engagement is with Twitter when compared to rival social networks.

On Thursday, Twitter also reported $791 million in ad revenue in the fourth quarter of last year, an increase of 23 percent year over year. It said abuse reports from people who interacted with their harasser declined 16 percent from a year ago, though it did not give overall numbers.

The social media company posted a decline in monthly active users, due in part to its campaign of deleting millions of abusive accounts after facing criticism it was being used as a platform for political influence operations and hate speech.

"Our [monetizable daily active users] are not comparable to current disclosures from other companies, many of whom share a more expansive metric that includes people who are not seeing ads", Twitter said in a letter to investors.

Recode notes that Twitter has roughly 60 million fewer users than Snapchat and far less users than Facebook's collection of apps.

Shares were recently off 9.7 percent at $30.85.

Instagram alone had 500 million daily active users in 2017 (the most recent data we could find) and is most likely getting even more than that today.

The San Francisco company disclosed its daily user base count for the first time, putting the figure at 126 million, up 9 percent from a year earlier. The company in 2018 marked its first full year of profitability under generally accepted accounted principles. The company expected a total revenue of between $715 million and $775 million for the first quarter of 2019; according to IBES data from Refinitiv, the midpoint of that figure range was below the average analyst estimate of $765 million. Its share of total worldwide digital ad spending is estimated to drop to 0.8 percent in 2019 from 0.9 percent in 2018, according to EMarketer.
