Amazon exploring potential alternatives to New York HQ

New York Is Having Second Thoughts About Amazon’s Second Headquarters

It looks like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) (shown above left) might have her way after all - Amazon is reconsidering building its second headquarters in New York City, according to a report from The Washington Post. The reports could be strategic moves on Amazon's part in threatening to pull out of the deal, or the company and its founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world, may truly be deciding whether to cut its losses.

Two sources "familiar with the company's thinking" spoke with the outlet.

"This whole thing has been bungled since day one by the mayor and the governor and Amazon", he said.

"They arrogantly continue to refuse to meet with key stakeholders to address their concerns, despite requests from New York's top elected officials to do so".

Shawn Dixon (left) worries about his neighborhood and business when Amazon comes to town. Whether it's building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbor we will be.

Amazon ramped up the speculation in 2018 over which location it would choose for its second headquarters in its high-profile search.

Amazon has been derided by some NY politicians, who have been critical of the project and its almost $2 billion in incentives cities agreed to provide in exchange for an estimated 25,000 well-paid jobs. Michael Gianaris, whose district includes the proposed site-and who is an outspoken critic of the $3 billion in state and local tax breaks and subsidies Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio proffered to Amazon.

Amazon has not purchased land for the NY project and its agreement with the city and state is non-binding.

In mid-November, Amazon made official the disappointing news Chicago had known for a week.

Late past year, newly elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez railed against the company for getting tax breaks at a time when she bemoaned of crumbling infrastructure. It's about cost of living, corps paying their fair share, etc. NY is known for being a solidly pro-labor city and the e-commerce giant has been the focus of several protests.

"For the state senate to oppose Amazon was governmental malpractice", Cuomo said.

Another City Hall source added, "Seems clear real friction in NY". NY residents fear the same will happen to them.

Cuomo's office then released a copy of legislation introduced on February 5 by Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris (D-Queens) that would allow New York City - not Albany - to impose a tax surcharge on city wealthy residents to help fund mass transit improvements and provide reduced fares for low-income New Yorkers.

Amazon also said it would build a new operations center in Nashville, Tenn., that will create more than 5,000 jobs.

Cuomo said NY would be able to "count on one hand the number of millionaires left in New York" if taxes go up.
