Google offers free password checking extension for Chrome

Google password checkup

If your kids have an Android or Chromebook device, you can use the Family Link app to do things like manage their Google Account settings, approve or block the apps and websites they can use, and set screen time limits. This may be driven by a fear of forgetting new passwords, something which most browsers such as Chrome can easily resolve thanks to Password Manager, which automatically enters usernames and passwords for your favourite sites, and can even offer highly secure suggestions.

This technology is created to help consumers to identify and re-secure accounts affected by data breaches before their at-risk accounts are abused. "We do report anonymous information about the number of lookups that surface an unsafe credential, whether an alert leads to a password change, and the domain involved for improving site coverage". This proactive safety measure reduces the risk of account hacking by ten times, Google says.

Once you install the Password Checkup extension, it'll appear as an icon in your browser bar.

Google and its academic partners said they have developed new privacy-preserving techniques, which means that Google will never access a user's username or password, and that any breach data stays safe from wider exposure. This it does by scanning user's account passwords and matching them with the databases of leaked login credentials for possible data breaches. From there, the app/site can take actions to help protect you, such as forcing you to log back in. In the blog, Google says it "won't bother you about outdated passwords you've already reset or merely weak passwords", like the ones topping this abysmal list. They have gathered roughly four billion unique user name and password combinations so far.

Google's new services sound like they might actually help you keep your login info safe.

"We only share information with apps where you have logged in with Google".

Google said it would start encouraging users to take the security check-up of their account on its homepage in English and seven Indian languages including Hindi, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu from Tuesday, the Safer Internet Day. "For example, we notify you when you've granted access to third-party sites or apps, but it's really important for you to understand the information that you share with these apps or sites".
