Samsung patent reveals camera-wielding S-Pen fit for James Bond

Samsung Galaxy A9

The current S Pen is fitted with a clicker that lets you take snaps with the Note 9.

Implementing a physical lens on the stylus would allow the S-Pen to be used as a camera, relaying its live image feed to the Galaxy Note device it is connected to.

There are quite a few reasons as to why an S Pen with a camera is probably not happening.

As reported by Patently Mobile, the patent, which was originally filed in February of 2017, involves an "electric pen device" with an "optical system including a lens and an image sensor", allowing a camera to be "controlled from the external electronic device". Even more impressive is the fact that the camera fitted inside the stylus will have optical zoom hardware for a more superior magnification compared to digital zoom.

As with all patents, there's no guarantee a camera-loaded S-Pen will ever become a reality.

The use case for a camera-equipped S Pen is also questionable given the Note 9, similar to the S9/S9+, already features one of the smartphone industry's most capable cameras.

This would result in a more expansive screen and remove the need for a display notch.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Android Pie update continues to make progress and it looks like it's still on track for a release in early 2019. Samsung's last S-Pen used a supercapacitor to quickly charge the device via the stylus slot. Still an S Pen with a camera and zoom will definitely be interesting.

An included diagram illustrates the pen sitting in a Galaxy Note-style holding storage space as well as peeking out slightly like those pop-up cam systems we've seen recently. Additionally, the pen would offer more versatility when taking photos, letting users get into positions that would be awkward if holding a phone. It is not for sure when will Samsung decide to use this tech in its smartphones.
