Spotify Will Block Your Account If You Use Ad Blockers

Spotify will soon ban your account if you use an ad blocker

To push this point home, the music streaming firm has updated its Terms of Service, explicitly stating that the practice can lead to immediate account termination. Spotify accounts that are flagged with using ad blockers might be disabled after March 1, when the new rules announced earlier this week will take effect.

You could soon see your Spotify account banned or shutdown completely if you use an ad blocker.

Spotify started cracking down on ad blockers last March when it was reported that around 2 million users were using tricks to avoid having to listen to ads in between tracks.

Those caught using the software were sent emails warnings that their accounts may be shut down if they kept using the third-party apps.

Spotify released yesterday its financial results for 2018 and along with that updated its Terms and Conditions.

When Spotify went public previous year, selling its shares on Wall Street for the first time, it disclosed to investors that about 2 million users deployed technology created to "suppress advertisements". While subscriptions make up nearly 90 percent of its revenue, the company still wants to protect the money it generates from ads.

Spotify has had enough of ad blockers, updating its terms of service to expressly forbid them as it tries to ramp up its advertising business.

Spotify's ad-blocker-blocking plans come to light just days after Spotify acquired two podcasting companies, Gimlet and Anchor, in a bid to become a more serious player in non-music streaming. The other 116 million are ad-supported users, which is 24% increase YoY and 6% QoQ.
