However a no-deal Brexit would see the United Kingdom revert to pre-legislation terms, meaning operators could force roaming charges upon customers from March 29.

That's right, if the law does not allow mobile operators in the United Kingdom to charge extra for roaming services, they might just remove the option to use your smartphone on a European network altogether.

'Additionally, operators also raised concerns that a limit on the costs that could be passed on to customers would affect the sustainability of certain roaming services.

In a draft statutory instrument, tabled by the government as part of a raft of no-deal preparations, the government has pledged to remove restrictions on mobile operators that force them to provide for free roaming throughout Europe.

The DCMS is apparently hoping that some mobile phone firms will voluntarily continue to offer free data roaming, but last week, MoneySavingExpert revealed that just two out of 12 major operators - Three and Smarty, which is owned by Three - had committed to keeping roaming free after Brexit.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright, replying to an urgent question in the Commons, said many mobile operators claim to have "no current plans" to change their approach to mobile roaming after Brexit.

They will then have the option of paying the additional charges.

If Theresa May's Brexit deal is adopted, a transition period of 21 months to December 2020 would maintain surcharge-free mobile data roaming.

Even under her deal, it is unclear whether charges could be avoided.

But Watson pointed out that when the United Kingdom introduced its "free roaming" rules two years ago, ministers had said consumers would save "millions of pounds a year".

Brits could see a return of data roaming charges when travelling to Europe if faced with a no-deal Brexit.

An O2 spokesperson said: "We now have no plans to change our roaming services across Europe. We will be working closely with the government and other European operators to try and protect the current arrangements so our customers can continue to enjoy free EU roaming once Britain officially leaves the EU".

The government will legislate to retain limits for using data overseas, now set at 45 pounds ($58) for each monthly billing period, he said.
