After being asked to bat, New Zealand demolished the Indian bowling attack to post an imposing 212 for four in their allotted 20 overs. While the rest of the Indian bowlers had to face the brunt of the Kiwi batsmen, Kuldeep Yadav bowled his four overs outstandingly at an economy rate of 6.50 in addition to picking up two wickets. Having regularly lost middle-order wickets, India gave the impression of lacking behind in the chase. After losing his opening partner, Rohit Sharma built a crucial partnership with Vijay Shankar. Vijay Shankar topscored for the visitors with 43.

Kane Williamson 27 (21) and Colin de Grandhomme 30 (16) kept the run-rate around 10 before Daryl Mitchell and Ross Taylor struck 19 (11) and 14 (7) respectively to cap the innings.

Scott Kuggeleijn took the Black Caps' other wicket - his first of the series.

Yadav also took two wickets, dismissing both New Zealand openers.

This is the same ground where India had their only defeat in the five-match ODI series, with Trent Boult's five-for skittling India for 92.

The hosts looked well on the way to victory with India needing 48 from the last three overs but when the first three balls of the 18th went for 15, the game was back in the balance.

Rohit Sharma, the India captain, elected to bowl in the third and final T20I match, at Seddon Park in Hamilton, with series levelled 1-1.

On the third ball of the final over, Karthik denied a single and later ended up taking a single off the next ball.
