All Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals to be made from e-waste

Olympic organizers said they expect to collect enough obsolete electronic devices to manufacture all Olympic and Paralympic medals

The last time Tokyo hosted the Olympics was in 1964.

The 2020 Olympic medals are going to be made from old mobile phones and other electronic devices.

Over $3 million worth of metals have been collected from more than 5 million devices, most of which were handed in at NTT Docomo stores.

The Tokyo Organising Committee said Friday that the goal of collecting over 30kg of gold has been nearly completed, with the necessary amount of precious metals expected to be gathered by the end of March. While the target for bronze and silver has been attained, the gold remains bit short.

Seven sports will receive extra funding to support their plans for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

By November 2018, 47,488 tonnes of discarded devices had been collected, with the public handing in another five million used phones to a local network provider.

Japan has almost hit its goal for collecting e-waste that will be used to create the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medals, officials have announced. The gold medal will be gold plated over a silver base, with 30.3 kilograms of gold, 4,100 kilograms of silver and 2,700 kilograms of copper required for production.

"We have very clearly and very professionally divided our working between grassroots and elite sportspersons".

"We have just begun working on systems that can connect the athletes to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) absolutely straight, transparent and quick", he added.
