Coke unveils its first new flavor in over a decade

Coke launches new flavor the first one in more than 10 years

- Atlanta-based Coca-Cola is bringing some new flavors to your grocery store.

Starting on February 25, Orange Vanilla will be available nationwide in 12-oz. cans and 20-oz. bottles.

The Orange Vanilla Coke has 140 calories per serving, while the Coke Zero version has 0 calories, of course. "We knew we had an opportunity to give fans the variety they crave without sacrificing the Coca-Cola taste they love".

Coca-Cola says it tested raspberry, lemon in ginger in focus groups, but orange and vanilla came out as favorites. But this is the first new flavor for regular Coke since Vanilla Coke, which the company re-launched in 2007, since it was phased out after its initial launch in 2002.

Irrational exuberance aside, one does perhaps wonder why now and why Orange Vanilla?

The napkins were distributed on Delta flights and included a picture of Diet Coke next to the message.

It's been over a decade since the original Coca-Cola released a new flavor. In introducing the new Orange Vanilla Coke, it hopes to ensure the Coke brand doesn't begin to feel stale with consumers. In 1985, the company tweaked it and saw a staggering consumer backlash. It's meant as a complementary beverage to boost sales (and claim more shelf space from rival Pepsi).
