Dem senator proposes bill to end federal marijuana prohibition

Sen. Floyd Prozanski (D-Eugene) has come out in support of exporting OR marijuana to other states where it's legal, as has the Cannabis Consortium.

"The federal prohibition of marijuana is wrong, plain and simple", Wyden said statement. If it were to become law, S. 420 would also establish guidelines for marijuana usage based on current alcohol regulations. "Too many lives have been wasted, and too many economic opportunities have been missed. It's time Congress make the changes Oregonians and Americans across the country are demanding".

The new bill aims to legalize, tax, and "responsibly regulate" marijuana consumption just like alcohol.

The proposed bill is part of a series of bills introduced in the Senate to aid the legislation of legal marijuana federally, dubbed by Wyden and Blumenauer as the Path to Marijuana Reform.

A proposal similar to Wyden's previously languished in the Senate and House.

Wyden wants the country to follow the example of OR, whose state government decriminalized marijuana in 1973.

The proposal, identical to a bill in the House, aims to ease the longstanding conflict between states where cannabis is legal in some form and the US government, which categorizes marijuana as a risky illegal drug, similar to LSD or heroin.

"One of the things that I've heard kind of bouncing around is that there's potentially a bill that will be proposed this session that allows for the exportation of OR marijuana", Roberts said. "It is equally important that small businesses, which would be disproportionately impacted by heavy federal taxes of any sort, be allowed to stay competitive in the industry". "Instead, legalization is connected to increased drugged driving fatalities, skyrocketing emergency room visits, the marketing of pot to pregnant women, continued arrest disparities and increased heavy and unsafe use".

Justin Strekal, political director of the pro-legalization group NORML, said in a statement that the proposal is another sign of the "growing public support for ending our failed war on cannabis consumers".
