Ford investing $1 bln, adding 500 jobs in Chicago

Ford Motor Company

The expansion is part of a commitment the company made in its agreement with the United Auto Workers in 2015, and brings the total number of workers at its Chicago-area plants to 5,800. It was revealed that it is not just Ford Motors but other automakers are also cutting back on producing the traditional cars in favor of the bigger sports utility vehicles and trucks. Ford is making the huge investment to make sure that it can keep producing the money-makers while it is scrambling to revamp its line-up.

"We are proud to be America's top producer of automobiles".

"When it's all finished, Chicago Assembly will have an all new state-of-the-art body shop, an all-new paint shop and new tooling to build this new lineup", Joe Hinrichs, Ford's president of global operations, said during a news conference at McCormick Place ahead of the Chicago Auto Show. "We reinvented the Explorer from the ground up, and this investment will further strengthen Ford's SUV market leadership". The Explorer is the all-time best selling SUV in the U.S.

Ford built almost 2.4 million vehicles in 2018, leading the United States as the top producer of vehicles as well as the leading exporter.

As said before, the investments in the plants and the hiring of 500 workers will make way for Ford to manufacture units of newly designed Ford Explorer, Explorer Hybrid, Lincoln Aviator and the Police Interceptor. Advanced manufacturing technologies at the plants include a collaborative robot with a camera that inspects electrical connections during the manufacturing process.

Additional improvements will be made to the tune of $40 million to enhance employee work environments including new LED lighting and security upgrades.

Ford Motors is set to invest $1 billion in its Chicago-based plants and will open 500 jobs as the company expands.

The Aviator is due in showrooms this summer and the Interceptor is the top-selling police vehicle in the country. "Ford's investment announcement demonstrates a commitment to the dedication of UAW members in Chicago". Ford is expanding the SUV's profile, offering the sportier performance ST model, which will have as much as 400 horsepower and 415 lb. -ft. of torque, with a top speed of 143 miles per hour.

Ford is killing off its slow-selling sedan business in the US and betting big on the SUVs and trucks that generate most of its profit.

In preparation for the new models.
