Man shot at Baltimore high school, suspect in custody

A hall monitor at a high school in Baltimore, U.S. state of Maryland, was shot Friday noon by a male visitor, authorities said.

All the students at the school are safe, police have said. The suspect is in custody.

The victim is an adult hall monitor and in serious but stable condition at an area hospital, school police Chief Akil L. Hamm said.

However, the flare up of violence inside a school is raising fresh questions about the safety of the city's educational facilities.

"These schools are just not secure", he added.

WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller reported that an ambulance left the school with a school police officer following. Cheryl Glenn after the city school board voted unanimously against it last month.

The suspect was taken into custody and the school was placed on lockdown.

"Sadly, we predicted this. We will update as more information becomes available".

"It was clear and evident today this guy meant to kill someone".

The victim was later identified as Michael Marks, a special education assistant at the school, Baltimore's Fox 45 reported. Officials said the shooter was confronted nearly immediately when they tried to enter the school.

G'Mar Matthews, an 18-year-old senior, said metal detectors at the school's main entrance were generally deactivated after classes begin for the day.
