Monfils stuns Tsitsipas in Sofia

ATP Sofia Gael Monfils sinks Stefanos Tsitsipas. Medvedev marches

The world no. 16 and 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev has become the fourth Sofia Open champion after a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Marton Fucsovics in an hour and 21 minutes, lifting the fourth ATP title from the sixth final.

The experienced Frenchman, who has slipped to No. 33 in the world rankings after a series of injuries, looked in ominously good form as he took his place in the last four without dropping a set this week.

"I want to be better, not everybody reaches number one, but I want to become number one", said Medvedev, who is now 16th in the ATP rankings.

The Italian outclassed top seed Karen Khachanov and Fernando Verdasco in a sparkling week in the Bulgarian capital but his energy went down in the third set.

It was an early break for Monfils who took a 1-0 lead on the serve of Tsitsipas and that is all he needed to run through the opening set. Saturday's other semi-final sees Matteo Berrettini - a 4-6 7-5 6-4 victor over Fernando Verdasco - take on Marton Fucsovics, who benefitted from 2016 champion Roberto Bautista Agut's withdrawal due to illness.

French seventh seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert downed Czech Tomas Berdych 6-2, 7-5 to set up an all-French final with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier Saturday.

The two players were meeting for the first time on the ATP Tour and made it a contest to remember.

Daniil Medvedev had a comfortable win the previous round as he beat Martin Klizan in straight sets.

Berdych, who is unseeded at the tournament he won in 2012, then turned the match around. But the 32-year-old was impressive against No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Sofia quarterfinals Friday.

Tsonga next plays Radu Albot of Macedonia, who won 6-2, 7-6 (7/2) against qualifier Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
